It’s amazing seeing the changes taking place at No 1. From our privileged spot here in the ‘goldfish bowl’ we are somewhat distracted by all the to-ings and fro-ings as Gieves & Hawkes transforms before us. No mere cosmetic facelift, we are watching (and part of) Gieves’ metamorphosis into an emporium for the modern day gentleman.
With so much already to entice and inspire I am sure that it would be easy to spend the day here. Question is, do you start or finish your day with a massage, wet shave and trim at Gentlemen’s Tonic? How many hours can you sit in the ejector seat in Bentley’s dreaming of the bygone age of travel and exploration; Just how long can you ponder the benefits of a single pleat, double pleat or flat-front trouser? (And why IS it always trouser in the singular? Makes me smile every time I hear it!) With Gieves’ Spring/Summer collection now in store – all very Hampton’s ‘daahling’, should you invest in your seersucker striped blazer now or next month when the sun finally decides to shine? And when is the right time to invest in your new bespoke shoes? (Our advice? Think like the fashion press, at least a season ahead, and start ordering your summer shoes now!)
New diversions chasing our heels are a selection of pared-down leather accessories from Bill Amberg and kick-about, casual shoes by Harry’s of London. And coming next month Gieves & Hawkes’ new ready-to-wear shoes. Can’t wait!
So it’s all go as activity ramps up for a grand unveiling in April.
And as to the question of where to start? Well, what could be more relaxing than grabbing a coffee from Napket next door, dropping your shoes in for a shine with the ShoeSnob and lying back against the leather as the steam rises and the cut-throat gets to work.
Watch for regular posts from our fantastic duo, our own ”Two Snobs on the Row.” Please contact our No 1 Savile Row Flagship store to book an appointment with carréducker. Prices start at £2,670 for a work of art that will indeed last a lifetime.
