Gieves & Hawkes

Autumn Winter 2011

Gieves & Hawkes AW11 collection pursues the essence of male indulgence and craftsmanship that are indicative of masculinity. Form and function continue to be the key attribute providing distinctive English design, which originates at No.1 Savile Row. This collection equips every modern traveller with the essence of practicality and luxury providing all forms of casual wear and tailoring for the perfect look.

James Gieve and Thomas Hawkes were once the outfitters for explorers and expeditions, seeing the need for style, functionality and quality in the garments they produced. Our Autumn / Winter 2011 seasonal collection takes inspiration from those items with a desire to explore, focusing fabrics and silhouettes epitomised by the elegant 1930’s gentlemen. This was an era of true English fashion, where the menswear trade had an eye for sartorial craftsmanship and the tailoring implored the beauty of traditional cloth.

Gieves & Hawkes continues to use its heritage and knowledge in its core line of suiting which is engineered with military precision; an admiral overcoat, a double face peacoat and an authentic made in England duffle through a collaborative design with Gloverall.

English Naval & seafaring explorers were not only adventurers; they were gentlemen who understood the importance of being correctly equipped for every occasion. The wardrobe became an investment and a valued outlay for expedition and travel.

Iconic outwear garments provide suitable attire for any expedition during the unpredictable autumnal forecast   — Military outwear in naval colours are teamed with autumnal tweeds and are striking silhouettes, perfect for long winter walks in the countryside. A variety of coloured corduroys envigorate the deep and rich colour palette, providing a sense of classical English styling and a timeless look. Add some layering to complete the look of the seasoned explorer. Resilient and durable accessories in calf leather and canvas are vital for an expedition both home and away. Warm woollen scarves, leather gloves, teamed with felt hats ensure that every traveller is equipped to conquer their mountains and battle the elements of their everyday commute and daily routines during these cold winter months.

To celebrate our traveller’s return from his adventures across the elements of AW11, Gieves & Hawkes will mark this occasion with a black tie event held in his honour. Onlookers will look back at our explorer’s calendar, marvelling at his expeditions over the past year where tales are told of his travels to the Himalayas and trekking across the highlands. Our traveller is elegant yet masculine and stands out from the crowd in a sea of black, refined in his navy dinner jacket and evening attire followed by a classic deep red velvet smoking jacket for post dinner drinks and cigars.

Luscious layers of soft cashmere scarves and knitwear, coupled with military style detail are seen in the naval inspired casual outerwear range. A structured look is perfect for those brisk winter days in London, layering with a weekend cashmere herringbone jacket over a cotton canvas blazer will provide our English gentleman with a refined and understated look. Pair this look with a check or windowpane shirt and our traveller will feel as comfortable relaxing in the countryside as he will feel pacing through the busy streets of a bustling city. From the historical adventures and iconic explorers of our time through to today’s modern gentleman and traveller, this collection provides every key ingredient to dress and style our grand adventurer where ever he may be.
